Local context
Behavioral Health Response (BHR) is a private nonprofit organization serving St. Louis, Missouri and surrounding counties, established in 1994. BHR is the hub for an Access Crisis Intervention (ACI) system that provides 24-hour access to mental health services for residents across the City of St. Louis and the counties of St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Warren, Iron, St. Francois, and Washington. In urgent moments, BHR offers confidential telephone counseling for people in mental health crises through its crisis hotline, staffed by paid professionals. BHR also provides free mobile outreach services, along with community referral services, to connect individuals with support when and where it’s needed. In addition, BHR delivers critical incident stress management (CISM), supporting communities during and after major or stressful events. Backed by trained behavioral science professionals with bachelor’s degrees in their respective disciplines, BHR focuses on barrier-free access, combining administration, crisis-line support, community-based outreach, and follow-up calls to help ensure a positive experience.
